Sirius Cooks
3 Months in a Nutshell
Sirius Cooks celebrated it's 1 year-anniversary in November 2008! Don't think you missed the party ... we're still planning it, even though it's many months later. But yes, we're over a year-old!
Beginning the end of October through December, Rosey the Riveting Rescue Rottie came into our lives. Many of you met her at the store, got to hear the horrible human story of abuse, but Rosey reminded us all, everyday, the benefit of forgiveness. She was 35lbs and along with Kathy Caldwell helping foster and share her magic with growing life (she is an organic gardener!) Rosey grew to 70lbs and her liver returned to normal. For what Rosey endured in her past, we were extremely particular about finding her a forever, gentle home. We did, and we receive photos of her. The latest had her happily lying on her back on a human bed. Rosey deserves it. Many, many thanks to those who contributed to the Rosey fund (medical, food, warm coat, spaying...). We couldn't have done it without the support of all our great customers. Dr. Sherman of PetVets in Oak Park and Dr. Royal, and those who even stopped in just to say hi to Rosey and give her healthy, get-well greetings.
We also added a "blog" to our website to add any important information regarding recalls of food or toys. We don't want to send out emails to you all the time, so be sure to check out the site for the latest info.
November also had a Dog Wedding in Oak Park, IL to benefit the Animal Care League. We were asked to make the wedding cake.
December ... Happy belated Holidays! We became the one-stop shop for every kind of healthy toy and treat for four-leggeds.
January ... Change in Washington, DC! For Sirius Cooks, more silent auction participations, new co-owner of a "sheeter" for making cookies.Thank you to Elizabeth M for listing us in the Chicago Tribune in the LoveHate column. Yes, we were in the Love column!
Continuing our education ... we attended a seminar on nutrition with Dr. Karen Becker. Awesome! Those who are coming in are already reaping the benefits of our learning from this amazing holistic veterinarian.

Sirius Cooks does What???
Top 5 questions
1. What do you really do?!
Yes, we cook for dogs and cats - Single-protein meals five days a week. Home-cooked from scratch without preservatives, totally unprocessed and made with nothing but the best restaurant quality ingredients. We're working with local farmers who raise their lambs, beef and chickens organically and pasture-raised. Tuesday = Chicken, Wednesday = Beef, Thursday = Lamb (Buffalo), Friday = Fish, Saturday = Turkey. We consult with holistic vets to seak out the most nutritious ingredients and carefully prepare the freshest vegetables and fruits to make a balanced meal.
2. I don't even cook for myself, why should I buy cooked food for my dog?
Ask our customers why they do so. They'll tell you the benefits: the overall health, the coat, the teeth, knowing where the ingredients come from. It's being Proactive giving your dog or cat the strongest immune system allowing them to thrive . Not cooking for yourself? Well, cheaper & healthier. What better reasons.? Diet is of supreme importance, right behind the love for your four-legged.
3. Ok. It's really cheaper?
Our home-made stews and organic home baked snacks are the only products in our store that have NEVER had any price increase since we've opened. 16oz stews are $4.99, 8oz for cats are $2.99 and the organic home baked snacks are $1 per ounce. All made by us with fresh ingredients. You feed less of our Sirius Suppers™ as there is more nutrition in it. As a local vet, Dr. Brancel of Prairie State Animal Hospital, says "life is too short to eat dry food all the time." Our suppers are eaten by themselves, or mixed with good kibble (dry food). No dyes. No preservatives. No chemicals.
4. I keep missing out on the chicken (the beef, the lamb... ) how do I get some saved?
Just give us a call or email us requesting which stews you would like us to reserve so we can put the Sirius Supper™ aside with your pet's name on as soon as we pot it up. That way we'll hold the stews for you. As the food is made fresh daily, we understand sometimes not being able to make it on a Fish Friday.
5. Can you mail it to me out-of-state or country?
Can't do that at this moment in time. The proverbial stay-tuned (like the design of our website). Many options to take into that consideration. Quality first, arriving fresh, shipping costs ... we're working to keep things affordable locally and keeping our local four-leggeds as healthy as we can.
Tip of the month
Wonder why dogs and cats especially, don't like refrigerated food. Not only was the food dogs and cats ate in the wild NOT refrigerated, dogs and cats are olfactory animals. Adding some warm water to their food not only makes it taste better, it smells better to a dog or cat. Dogs and cats need moisture. While it's better to get the moisture from within the actual food, the wetter the better as long as it's not soup-like (just like a mouse or a rabbit). Conversation starters: Humans have about 5 millions scent receptors and dogs have around 250 million receptors*, while cats have 30-50 million receptors.** Be kind to their noses.

Specials of the month
We have Sirius Snacks™ Valentine hearts made with organic ingredients for dogs and some real lovely cat treats too! We also purchased a lot of Bravo Rabbit Patties. One of the best raw diets in this country. You can read more about it at the Bravo website. As a "basic" raw diet it will need supplements, but is one of the best proteins for a dog. We also have the Beef, Chicken and Turkey Balanced Raw Diets on sale. Now is the best time to try out a raw diet, if only to add to your dog's or cat's current diet. Until the end of February!

Cheers,
Harriet & Julie
